Car safety (GNCAP) test:

It is called GNCAP (Global New Car Assessment Program). It’s been over a year since the new Global NCAP crash test protocol went into effect. Under the new protocol, a vehicle can get a 5-star rating only if it gets the required marks in the test, in addition to features like electronic stability control, pedestrian protection, side impact and seat belt reminder for Global NCAP. So far 13 models of cars manufactured in India have been tested under this new protocol. The details of the top 5 ranked cars are listed below.

5. Mahindra Scorpio N- 29.25 points (5 stars):

Mahindra’s Scorpio N SUV scored 29.25 out of 34 points in adult safety tests. As a result it gets a 5-star rating. In the SIDE IMPACT test with a collapsible barrier, the Scorpio N scored 16 out of 17 for good protection and received an ‘OK’ rating for side impact tests. Meanwhile, in the child safety tests, the Scorpio N has a 3-star rating with a score of 28.93 out of 49. The Scorpio N also meets the new pedestrian safety requirements and in terms of standard safety features, the Scorpio N gets dual airbags, seatbelt reminders and ESC (optional on Z2 and Z4 trims, standard on others).

4. Volkswagen Taigun/Skoda Kushaq – 29.64 points (5 stars):

These mid-size SUVs from Volkswagen and Skoda are built on the same platform and therefore have similar scores. The Qashqai and Taigun were the first cars to be tested under the improved testing protocol. It scored 29.64 out of 34 points in the adult safety test and has a 5-star rating. A model with two airbags is used for the front crash model and a model with six airbags is used for the side crash model.

It scored 14.5 out of 17 points in the first test and ‘OK’ in the second test. Both SUVs meet UN 127 pedestrian protection norms, but the GTR9 does not. Both have features like standard safety kit dual airbags, ESC, traction control and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

3. Volkswagen Virtus/Skoda Slavia – 29.71 points (5 stars):

The Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia also received a 5-star safety rating. These sedans rank high on the list, especially as a result of their high adult rating. These midsize sedans scored a total of 29.71 out of 34 points in adult safety tests, and 14.2 out of a possible 17 points in the SIDE IMPACT test with a collapsible barrier. Also, in the side pole impact tests, they both received an ‘OK’ rating. Meets both UN 127 and GTR9 pedestrian safety standards. Slavia and Virtus received a 5-star rating in the child safety test, scoring 42 out of 49 points. Both sedans get standard safety kit like dual airbags, ESC, traction control and ISOFIX child seat mounts.

2. Tata Nexon – 32.22 points (5 stars):

Following its 2023 model facelift, the Nexon has been subjected to Global NCAP’s safety tests for the third time. Although the Nexon already had a 5-star rating, the new test improved its standing by scoring 32.22 points for Adult Occupancy Protection (AOP) and 44.52 points for Child Protection (COP). That means it gets 5-stars in both categories. The Nexon currently holds the second highest score for adult and child safety in the Safest Cars for India category. Standard safety features on the Nexon include six airbags, ESC, seat belt reminders, ISOFIX anchors and a passenger airbag deactivation switch.

1. Tata Harrier/Safari – 33.05 points (5 stars):

Tata Motors’ flagship SUVs, the Harrier and the Safari, have been crash tested and both have received a full 5-star safety rating. The new Tata Harrier and Safari scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult safety. In the SIDE IMPACT test with a collapsible barrier, the SUVs were reported to provide “good protection” for the head, chest, abdomen and pelvis. The Harrier and Safari facelifts scored 45 out of 49 points in the child occupant safety tests and received a 5-star rating. Standard safety features on both SUVs include 6 airbags, ESP, 3-point seat belts with reminders for all seats, ABS with EBD and tire pressure monitoring system.
