Topanga Canyon Boulevard Closed for 55 Hours for Critical Infrastructure Upgrade

A 3.6-mile section of Topanga Canyon Boulevard remains closed as of Saturday morning as crews work to install a massive, 84-inch underground pipe. The extended shutdown, lasting 55 hours, began just after midnight and is expected to continue until 7 a.m. on Monday.

The closure impacts traffic between Pacific Coast Highway and Grand View Drive. Caltrans initiated the project to bolster the roadway’s resilience against future storms and debris flows, a growing concern in the wake of recent natural disasters.

Addressing Damage from Past Storms and Wildfires

This weekend’s work is part of a larger effort to repair damage sustained from the Palisades Fire and subsequent winter storms. According to Caltrans, the same stretch of Topanga Canyon Boulevard has experienced ongoing nightly closures to facilitate these repairs. Officials anticipate completing the full scope of repairs by this summer.

The newly installed pipe is strategically positioned underneath and perpendicular to the roadway. A senior official stated the pipe is “designed to carry increased capacity of water and mud during rainstorms, reducing the amount of debris flow on the highway in future storms.” This proactive measure aims to mitigate the risk of road closures and ensure safer travel during periods of heavy rainfall.

Detour Routes for Motorists

Motorists are strongly advised to plan alternate routes during the closure. For those traveling south on Topanga Canyon Boulevard, Caltrans recommends the following detour:

  • Take the Ventura (101) Freeway south.
  • Transition to the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway.
  • Continue west on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway to reach Pacific Coast Highway (PCH).

Northbound drivers can utilize the same route in reverse.

Importantly, Topanga Canyon Boulevard will remain open to traffic between Grand View Drive and the 101 Freeway, ensuring continued access to the Topanga area and supporting local businesses.

This infrastructure project underscores the ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving California’s roadways, particularly in areas vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters. The long-term benefits of this upgrade are expected to significantly enhance safety and reliability for commuters and residents alike.
