Israel’s ground invasion of Gaza is delayed, but what keeps falling are bombs. In the Strip and also on its borders. This Sunday afternoon a missile hit the UN headquarters in southern Lebanon, where 650 Spanish soldiers who are part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) are located.
Fortunately, this attack has left no victims, as confirmed by the Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles. Even so, the scare and concern have been maximum. “We are investigating this incident,” UNIFIL spokesperson Andrea Tenenti explained to the media, adding that he has not specified further, not even the origin of the shot.
Robles contacted the Spanish general on the ground, Aroldo Lázaro, as soon as he became aware of what happened. The soldier reassured the defense minister and gave her a report on the state of the situation. Apparently, what hit the barracks was not exactly a guided missile, but rather an unguided self-propelled rocket.
Control tasks
There is also speculation that it did not come from the south, from Israel, but from the north, from Lebanon itself, and that they fell short, although there is no official confirmation of this. The acting prime minister of the latter country, Nayib Mikati, also had a conversation with the Spanish general to inquire about the circumstances of the incident and convey his “solidarity” with UNIFIL.
The 650 Spaniards are part of the contingent of 10,500 troops that the force has deployed to the area. They are the so-called ‘blue helmets’ whose mission is to control the area. In principle, its role at the moment is to prevent hostilities in Gaza from reaching the neighboring country, where Hezbollah threatens to intervene in favor of Hamas.
The area is what is known as a ‘hot spot’ since the local militia is willing to intervene in the war if Israel does not stop its offensive against Gaza. In fact, it has been launching projectiles in the area for days as a threat.
