Nilambur ∙ The students who drowned in Karimpuzha in Nedunkayat were identified around nine o’clock in the night. The group consisting of PV Aisha Rida (13), a class nine student of Kallingalparam MSM HSS, and Fatima Muhsina (11), a class six student, were living in the dormitory of the Forest Department at Nedunkayat.

The accompanying teachers could not identify the dead bodies that were brought to the district hospital. The children were identified after Faiza, the teacher in charge of the dormitory in Nedunkayat, was taken to the hospital. A car was sent to Nedunkayam to fetch the teacher, but could not reach the place as elephants came down the forest road. Then it was brought to Cherupuzha in a lorry in Koop. The dead bodies were brought to the hospital by car and identified.

The children had come to the nature study camp of Scouts and Guides organized by the school authorities in collaboration with the Forest Department. The group consisting of 49 students and 8 teachers reached Nedunkaya at 4 pm yesterday. Before starting the camp, they came down to look around the Nedunkayam area. Three of the children who got off at Karimpuzha near Dosan Bridge were drowned. Teacher MC Mubashir rescued one.

Karulai Range Officer PK Mujeeb Rahman also reached the spot. Around 6:30 Forest Department driver Siddique Ali drowned Ayesha and Fatima and took them to Nilambur District Hospital. The death was confirmed here.

Ayesha Rida is the daughter of Abdul Rasheed in Kurungad Kanmanam Puthanvalap. Fatima Muhsina is the daughter of Putthanathani Chellur Kunnath Pitiyekal Mustafa. In the incident, Minister A. K. Saseendran instructed the Forest Principal Chief Conservator to conduct a detailed investigation and submit an urgent report.
