Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Iraq, especially the Kurdistan region, is witnessing a period of intense preparations for its regional elections scheduled for next June. While many view these elections as an opportunity to strengthen democracy and achieve needed changes, there are challenges and tensions worth considering.

As the election date approaches, tension is increasing within the political arena in Iraqi Kurdistan, as the popularity of the main Kurdish parties appears to be declining. This decline is partly due to a series of internal and external crises plaguing the region, including the financial crisis and geopolitical tensions with neighboring countries.

Among the most prominent crises facing Kurdistan are the financial crisis and the localization of salaries in Baghdad. Voters blame Kurdish parties for their inability to manage economic affairs, which leads to a decline in popular support for these parties.

Geopolitical tensions are increasing with neighboring countries, including Turkey and Iran, as the region witnesses continuous Turkish bombing of the border areas. This escalation weakens the internal situation and negatively affects political and economic stability.

The region is also witnessing a decline in the role of small opposition forces and Islamic parties, which strengthens the position of the main Kurdish parties and increases the stability of the political situation in their favor.

The Kurdish newspaper Awina (The Mirror), whose headquarters is in Sulaymaniyah, conducted an opinion poll among citizens that included most regions and cities in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

According to the survey, 3,542 people from all four electoral districts of the Kurdistan Region participated in a special program on the Internet, which was free of any interference and those who voted had to answer the questions only once.

The poll, which was conducted scientifically and impartially, indicates that 93 percent of those who do not participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections say that they no longer have conviction and confidence in the electoral process and parliamentary life.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party topped the party list with 29.98 percent, followed by its traditional rival, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, which received 17.90 percent of the participants’ votes, followed by the People’s Front list led by Lahore Sheikh Janki with 12.42 percent of the votes.

The region is witnessing a decline in the role of small opposition forces and Islamic parties.
