Israel-Hamas Conflict Pauses as Trump’s Peace Plan Gains Traction
A ceasefire in Gaza began Saturday following an agreement by Israel to halt bombing, a move prompted by a 20-point peace plan proposed by US President Donald trump. The development marks a potential turning point in the two-year-old conflict, though notable challenges remain.
The agreement followed a public appeal by Trump, who shared a statement from Hamas on his social network, Truth Social, urging Israel to cease its aerial campaign. “Hamas is ready for peace,” Trump wrote.
Acknowledging the response from the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza,the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the country was “preparing for the immediate implementation of the first stage of President Trump’s plan,” specifically focusing on the prompt release of all hostages. “We will continue to work in full cooperation with the President and his team to bring the war to an end in accordance with the principles set out by Israel, which are aligned with President Trump’s vision,” the office added.
This breakthrough represents a significant moment in Trump’s ongoing peace efforts. In a detailed statement,Hamas explained its decision,stating,”Out of keenness to end the aggression and genocide being carried out against our steadfast people in the Gaza Strip,and stemming from national duty,and in defense of the constants,rights,and higher interests of our people,the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has conducted in-depth consultations within its leadership institutions,broad consultations with Palestinian forces and factions,and consultations with brothers,mediators,and friends,to reach a responsible position in dealing with US President Donald Trump’s plan.”
Trump also quoted Hamas expressing gratitude for the efforts of the US president and the broader international community, stating, “Hamas appreciates the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald trump, calling for an end.”
The positive developments have garnered international support. Prime minister Narendra Modi of India publicly praised Trump’s leadership,writing on X (formerly Twitter): “We welcome President Trump’s leadership as peace efforts in Gaza make decisive progress. Indications of the release of hostages mark a significant step forward. India will continue to strongly support all efforts towards a durable and just peace.”
