First Supermoon of 2024 to Illuminate Skies This Saturday Night

A spectacular supermoon is set to grace the night sky this Saturday, offering stargazers a breathtaking celestial display, provided weather conditions allow. The event marks the first of three supermoons expected throughout the year, with subsequent occurrences anticipated in November and December.

According to experts, a supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with its closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This proximity results in the moon appearing significantly larger and brighter than a typical full moon.

What Makes a Supermoon Special?

A researcher from the University of Canterbury explained that this Saturday’s supermoon will appear approximately 10% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon. This enhanced visibility makes it a particularly compelling event for both seasoned astronomers and casual observers.

Moonrise is estimated to occur around 9:40 p.m. local time, and the supermoon will remain visible throughout the night. While optimal viewing conditions are typically found away from city lights, the brightness of the moon means it will be readily observable even within urban areas.

Spotting Jupiter Alongside the Supermoon

Adding to the celestial spectacle, observers may also be able to locate Jupiter near the supermoon. The researcher noted that the bright star positioned just south of the moon will, in fact, be Jupiter. This offers a unique opportunity to view two prominent celestial bodies in close proximity.

“As with all astronomical objects it’s usually better to be in the middle of nowhere to limit light pollution, but the moon is pretty bright so you’ll be able to see it from cities,” the researcher added.

The upcoming supermoons in November and December promise further opportunities to witness this stunning astronomical phenomenon.
