Ukraine Peace Talks Hit Reality: No Quick Fix in Sight

Moscow is rejecting key security proposals, and the White House concedes a swift resolution to the conflict is unlikely.

  • Russia is refusing to consider the stationing of European troops in Ukraine,a central demand from Kyiv.
  • Donald Trump continues to express optimism about a potential deal, but Western allies haven’t publicly echoed his assessment.
  • Security guarantees for Ukraine, resembling NATO’s Article 5, remain the biggest obstacle to progress.
  • The White House now acknowledges that achieving peace will be a long and complex process.

The pursuit of peace in Ukraine is running headfirst into a wall of geopolitical reality. Moscow is signaling it won’t budge on core demands, and for the frist time, the White House is admitting a quick end to the war isn’t on the horizon. The situation is particularly challenging for US President Donald Trump, who has actively promoted negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, but is now facing increasingly difficult circumstances.

According to American officials, vladimir Putin is primarily establishing “red lines,” including continued territorial ambitions.

Trump’s Optimism, Met with Skepticism

Despite this, Trump reiterated after a conversation with Putin on Sunday that the Russian leader is “ready for peace.” Though, this assessment hasn’t been publicly supported by key Western allies, raising questions about its credibility.

The Security Guarantee Standoff

The most significant hurdle remains securing long-term protection for Ukraine. Zelensky is pushing for security guarantees “similar to NATO’s Article 5,” which would commit the US to defending Ukraine in the event of a renewed attack.

Trump, however, is avoiding such explicit commitments. He also faces resistance from within his own party, with Republicans like Vice President J.D. Vance opposing any pledge that could draw the United States into a war over Ukraine.

Sanctions, a “reset,” and European Concerns

Another component of Trump’s strategy involves achieving “strategic stability” with Russia. This entails not only managing nuclear risks but also normalizing diplomatic and economic ties, potentially lifting sanctions and reintegrating Russia into the global economic system.

This approach has been met with skepticism from European leaders and some within the American establishment, who view it as naive and risky given Putin’s continued leadership.

A Shift in Expectations

As the year draws to a close, Trump and Zelensky find themselves in a markedly different position than just months ago.Detailed peace proposals are on the table, but Trump has conceded that a swift resolution is unlikely. “There are no deadlines,” he said, effectively abandoning his previous promise to end the war “in one day.”

Thomas Graham, a former National Security Council official, noted that despite the criticism, negotiations only became feasible after Trump resumed direct dialog with Putin in February:

“The contours of a final settlement are visible, even if both sides strongly deny it.”

Crucially, several key questions remain unanswered: Is Russia genuinely prepared to compromise? Will it accept a demilitarized zone? And what specific guarantees is the United States willing to offer ukraine in the face of future aggression? The answers to these questions will ultimately determine whether current diplomatic efforts can pave the way to a lasting peace.

On December 28, Trump and Zelensky held a meeting in Florida. The meeting was described as one of the best personal meetings between the two leaders, requiring careful repair of strained relations.Zelensky shared that Trump told him what Putin is willing to consider as part of a peace agreement, but did not provide specifics.Zelensky also noted that the peace plan includes security guarantees for Ukraine for 15 years, with a possible extension, and that Ukraine would ideally like guarantees for up to 50 years.
