Erdogan is proud: Ankara announced that the KAAN combat helicopter made its first flight today (Wednesday). The production project of the country’s national fighter jet, called the TF-X, began in 2016 and was completed today. The Turkish airline TUSAS shared a video showing the fifth-generation helicopter taking off and returning to the base in the north of the country’s capital.

In 2017, the airline signed a deal worth 125 million dollars with the British company BAE Systems so that they could develop a “next generation” fighter jet. The goal was to upgrade Turkey’s air force, the Indian “NDTV” website reported.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoganwrote on his X (former Twitter) account: “Despite those who said “they can’t do it”, and sufferers of digestive problems who said “looks like a radiator”, and the collaborators who tried to sabotage the Cannes project from the first moment – our national fighter jet met with The sky today, thank God.”

The head of Turkey’s Defense Industry Directorate (SSB), Haluk Gorgon, was proud and wrote about the helicopter: “It is not only a fifth-generation combat helicopter, but also a technology that few countries in the world have,” he wrote on his X (former Twitter) account.

“We have engraved another landmark and development in history, which will be one of the milestones in the defense industry. That the first flight of our national fighter jet KAAN will be beneficial to our nation,” he said. He further said and added that they “wholeheartedly congratulate all our companies that contributed to the project, especially our TAI engineers and technical teams”, and declared: “This is the success of our nation’s children. We will continue to strengthen and further develop our independent technologies for the sake of the nation’s security and our friends,” he wrote and tagged the president of Turkey, Erdogan.

According to reports, the new fighter jet will be powered by two General Electric F-110 engines, which are also used in Lockheed Martin’s fourth-generation F-16s. As a fifth generation fighter, he has stealth abilities. Accordingly, Turkey aims to use locally produced engines, and use is expected to begin in 2028.

In addition, Turkey recently secured a deal to purchase 40 F-16 fighter jets and 79 modernization kits (a process of updating and changing existing software systems) for its F-16s that came from the United States, NDTV reported.

In addition, to increase its air fleet, Ankara is also interested in purchasing 40 Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, built by companies of Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Spain, represented by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo. However, the US imposed sanctions on Turkey’s defense industry in December 2020 over the purchase of Russia’s S-400 missile defense system. It removed Turkey from the F-35 fighter jet program, where it was a producer and buyer.
