The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement regarding the resolution adopted by the French National Assembly on April 29, 2024, concerning the Assyrians and Chaldeans, Day.Az reports.
It is noted that this resolution, which includes accusations against the Ottoman Empire, is devoid of legal and historical justification.
“Last year, the French government stated that it did not support a similar resolution passed by the French Senate. The fact that the same unfounded accusations are being put on the agenda of the National Assembly this time by members of the ruling party is an example of attempts to distort historical events for political interests “, the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Official Ankara emphasizes that parliaments do not have the authority to interpret and evaluate history.
“This resolution also contradicts the 1948 UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, which states that charges for the crime of genocide can only be brought by a competent court,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry summarizes.
