Thousands of Turks are fleeing Erdoğan’s regime to Germany – and the number is growing. German politicians and police officers are trying to intervene effectively, without falsely considering the geostrategically important NATO partner Türkiye.

The facts: According to the Federal Migration Office, 7,067 people with a Turkish passport will submit an initial application for asylum in 2021. In 2022 there were already 23,938 A year later there were 61,181 – an increase of 155.6 percent compared to the year before that! And 2024? There are already around 15,000 new arrivals. Two thirds of them are men.

According to the authorities, more than two-thirds of asylum applications are unfounded

The vast majority of refugees are tired of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan (70). This is mainly due to huge price hikes in the country. But that is not enough for a right to stay in Germany.

► Only one in twelve applicants (8.4%) accepted their reasons for fleeing. Those affected receive protected status.

► The asylum offices consider that 61.6% of asylum applications are “obviously unfounded”.

▶︎ This is also causing trouble at the government level. According to BILD information, the German authorities are complaining about “14,275 Turkish citizens who are obliged to leave the country”.

► In the first quarter of 2024, only 449 of the 2,776 Turks who were legally obliged to leave the country were deported. “In particular, Turkey does not accept charter flights,” he says succinctly in Ministry files.

Huge criticism from the police and the Union

Head of the Federal Police Union Heiko Teggatz (51): “These numbers are more than alarming. Turkey is a safe country of origin, a NATO partner and a candidate for EU membership. So Turkey in particular has no credible reason to reject collective returns.”

According to Teggatz, the impression could arise that “Erdoğan, like Putin and Lukashenko, is destabilizing the European Union through this behavior.” It asks the triad: “Continue to expand the EU’s border protection, eliminate pull factors and consistently deport people who have to leave the country.”

▶︎ Union parliamentary deputy group Andrea Lindholz (53, CSU) tells BILD: “An additional pull factor is the dual citizenship that recently decided the traffic light, which is also being actively promoted by the federal government. Ms. Faeser and the traffic light talk about limitation, but it is still insufficient and counterproductive.

▶︎ Interior expert Stefan Heck (41, CDU) wants to blackmail Erdoğan. It is about financial loans from the federal government for rebuilding schools after an earthquake. According to BILD information, 300 million euros recently flowed from Berlin to Ankara. Heck says: “Erdoğan happily accepts financial aid from Europe, but steadfastly refuses to take back his own citizens.” That is not the same thing.
