It was a highly anticipated speech that Finance Minister Gernot Blümel gave on Wednesday evening. On the one hand, because it was one of the rare moments when Blümel appeared not as a minister but as Vienna’s ÖVP boss – a year after the final result of the Vienna election was announced.
The Vienna ÖVP was able to double its result to more than 20 percent. On the other hand, Blümel’s speech was eagerly awaited because chat affairs, investigations by the corruption prosecutor’s office and the resignation of Sebastian Kurz as Federal Chancellor are currently omnipresent in appearances by top Turkish politicians. Blümel designed the prelude to his speech accordingly – and welcomed those present “in these politically stormy times” without mentioning the chat affair by name.
