The social network X, formerly known as Twitter, sued a nonprofit organization that fights hate speech and misinformation on Monday, accusing it of doing false claims and encourage advertisers to stop investing on Elon Musk’s social network.

US media reported that X, owned by Elon Musk, had sent a letter to the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) and threatened to sue the nonprofit for unspecified damages.

In response to that letter, CCHR lawyers accused X of “intimidate those who have the courage to advocate against incitement, hate speech and harmful content online,” Reuters reported. They also claimed that X’s accusations lacked any factual basis.

The lawsuit stems from a report published in July outlining the findings of the CCHR investigation that hate speech towards minority communities on the platform had increased.

The CEO of X, Linda Yaccarinodismissed the report as false, saying it was based on “a collection of incorrect, misleading, and outdated metrics, most from the period shortly after Twitter’s acquisition.”

In a blog post published on Monday, X claimed CCHR had accessed his data without authorization and accused him of ‘scraping’ data from his platform, violating X’s terms. He reiterated that metrics contained in the investigation were used out of context to make claims unfounded on the platform. In addition, the social network has recently sued four anonymous entities from Texas and Bright Data, from Israel, for data theft.
