Two Doors Down’ Christmas Special Sets Early Holiday Tone, Navigates Loss of Co-Creator

A new holiday special of the beloved Scottish sitcom, Two Doors Down, is set to air on BBC One this Christmas, offering a blend of festive cheer and relatable domestic tension. The show’s creator discussed the challenges and rewards of crafting a successful Christmas episode, particularly in the wake of profound personal loss.

The enduring appeal of a Christmas special lies in its ability to capture the unique atmosphere of the season, according to a leading writer for the series. “The audience is slightly different that time of year,” he explained. “Somehow, you’re trying to catch what’s magic about Christmas. The line to tread is emotion and warmth, without mawkishness.” He also noted the importance of originality, acknowledging that certain storylines, like a traditional Christmas lunch, have been extensively explored.

A Pre-December Christmas

This year’s installment breaks from convention by setting the scene in late November. The plot centers around Beth and Eric (played by Arabella Weir and Alex Norton), who impulsively decide to decorate for the holidays early, prompting a predictably chaotic reaction from their neighbors. “Cue their troublesome neighbours turning up, asking what gives the Bairds the right to ‘declare it’s Christmas’ – and demanding a wee mince pie,” the writer detailed. This scenario encapsulates the show’s signature style – finding humor in the friction between everyday expectations and the realities of human interaction.

“It’s typical of the show,” he continued. “It’s those moments that should be harmonious, but there’s a bit of tension as people bring up their expectations around Christmas.” He believes Two Doors Down is uniquely suited to the Christmas special format due to its grounded, domestic setting. “You’re not having to bend it,” he stated.

Returning After Loss

The upcoming special carries particular significance as it marks the show’s return following the unexpected death of co-creator Simon Carlyle in 2023. Initially, the future of the series was uncertain. “In the immediate aftermath of all that, it felt like there was no appetite for it,” the writer admitted. However, a renewed sense of creative possibility emerged over time. “And then, I suppose, time passes, and you go, ‘Well, actually, creatively, there’s more to do there.’”

He emphasized the privilege of continuing the show’s legacy with a Christmas episode, while acknowledging the uncertainty surrounding future seasons. “It’s a real privilege to have a Christmas episode. Whether everyone would want to do more than that, we don’t know yet. It’s over to the audience now.”
