University of Chicago Medical Center Earns Eighth ‘Top Teaching Hospital’ Honor from The Leapfrog Group
The University of Chicago Medical Center has once again been recognized for its commitment to patient safety and quality, receiving the prestigious “Top Teaching Hospital” designation from The Leapfrog Group for the eighth time. This distinction places the medical center among the nation’s leading hospitals dedicated to both exceptional care and the education of future medical professionals.
The Leapfrog Group’s Top Hospital awards are highly competitive, recognizing facilities that demonstrate unwavering adherence to the highest standards of safety and quality across the United States. To qualify, hospitals must achieve top rankings on Leapfrog’s bi-annual Hospital Safety Grade survey and excel within their specific category. The University of Chicago Medical Center, the flagship institution of the UChicago Medicine health system, also secured its 28th consecutive “A” grade for safety from The Leapfrog Group in November 2025.
Out of over 2,400 hospitals assessed nationwide, only 156 earned the Top Hospital distinction in this cycle. The honorees represent a diverse range of institutions, including 73 teaching hospitals, 56 general hospitals, 16 rural hospitals, and 15 children’s hospitals.

The Top Hospital award is bestowed upon hospitals that publicly report their performance data via the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and achieve high scores based on a rigorous methodology. Key criteria evaluated include effective infection control protocols, comprehensive maternity care, and robust systems for prevention of medication errors, among other vital standards.
