UK & Irish Box Office Soars to Post-Pandemic High, Led by ‘Minecraft’

The UK and Irish box office achieved its strongest annual performance since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2025, with the gaming adaptation A Minecraft Movie claiming the title of highest-grossing film of the year. Total revenue reached £1.07 billion, a modest 1% increase over 2024’s £1.06 billion, signaling a sustained recovery for the industry.
A Gradual Return to Pre-Pandemic Levels
The 2025 figures represent a significant milestone in the sector’s rebound. While still below the £1.35 billion generated in 2019 – the last fully “normal” year before the pandemic – the increase demonstrates a strengthening market. The physical cinema box office experienced a dramatic collapse in 2020, plummeting to £323.7 million as lockdowns and restrictions took hold. Revenue gradually recovered to £595.5 million in 2021 and £980.7 million in 2022, finally surpassing the £1 billion mark in 2023 with a total of £1.06 billion.
Production Pipeline Rebounds, Strategy Shifts
The number of films released in 2025 totaled 1,092, a slight decrease from the 1,124 releases in 2024. However, this figure suggests a revitalization of the film production pipeline, which was disrupted by both the pandemic and the industry strikes of 2023. In fact, the 2025 release numbers exceed pre-pandemic levels, with 938 films released in 2019.
A notable trend observed by analysts is a shift in distribution strategy. There was a marked increase in “saturation” releases – films playing in over 250 venues simultaneously – with 224 such releases in 2025, compared to 200 in 2024 and 188 in 2019. Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale exemplified this strategy, securing openings in over 750 cinemas across the UK.
‘Minecraft’ Dominates, British Films Find Success
A Minecraft Movie proved to be a cultural phenomenon, capitalizing on its viral appeal – including the widely discussed “chicken jockey” scene – to achieve box office dominance. The film grossed £56.88 million in the UK and Ireland, and also topped the North American box office with $423.9 million. Globally, it earned $958.3 million, placing fifth overall, behind the Chinese animated film Ne Zha 2, which led worldwide returns with $2.24 billion.
Among British productions, the fourth installment in the Bridget Jones series, Mad About the Boy, emerged as the most successful, earning £46.4 million. It significantly outperformed Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale and 28 Years Later, which secured second and third place with £18.4 million and £15.6 million respectively.
“Event Cinema” Continues to Thrive
The strength of “event cinema” releases was also apparent, contributing £44 million – 4.1% of the total box office revenue. Ten films within this category exceeded £1 million in earnings. Notably, the filmed production of the West End musical Six the Musical achieved the best performance ever for a stage production, amassing £6.2 million. However, this figure remains below the record set by Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour in 2023, which generated £12.3 million.
“Although it saw only a small year-on-year increase in box office, 2025 undoubtedly marked a significant further step in the sector’s recovery following the challenges of recent years,” stated a senior official from the UK Cinema Association. “There is great optimism that the coming months will see significant further progress.”
