Drone Production Takes Flight
Alongside the munitions expansion, the government is also investing in unmanned aerial systems. Healey will announce the opening of two new drone factories this week,located in Plymouth and Swindon,further diversifying the UK’s defence manufacturing capabilities.
“We are making defence an engine for growth, unambiguously backing British jobs and British skills as we make the UK better ready to fight and better able to deter future conflicts,” healey is expected to state. “This is the path that delivers national and economic security.”
Increased Defence Spending and NATO Concerns
This push for greater self-reliance is supported by a commitment to increase UK defence spending to 3% of GDP by 2034. However, a recent report from the defence Committee has raised concerns about the UK’s continued dependence on the United States and insufficient investment in its own defences.
According to a statement from the committee, the government must assess how the UK can replace US capabilities should they be withdrawn. “Accelerating the speed of industrial change is essential, and readiness must be at the top of this government’s agenda,” the committee emphasized.
The committee has repeatedly voiced concerns regarding the UK’s ability to defend itself, calling for urgent strengthening of both conventional and nuclear capabilities, as well as improved collaboration with NATO allies. A key criticism centers on the “glacial pace” of improvements to civil defence and resilience, possibly leaving the UK vulnerable and failing to meet its Article 3 obligations to maintain collective capacity to resist armed attack.
