Kyiv: Ukraine has claimed responsibility for the shipwreck of a Russian warship “Moscow” in the Black Sea, but Russia has denied reports that the ship was wrecked during a Ukrainian attack, but has said it has evacuated 510 crew members aboard the warship ‘Mosque’.
Russia said the explosion was caused by explosives stored on the ship, but did not say what caused the explosion. Russia says the 610-foot-long Moscow is still at sea and the ship’s main weapons arsenal has not been damaged. Ukraine alleges that Moscow destroyed its Neptune missiles and that the ship began to sink.
The Moscow was the most strategic warship of the Russian military, stationed in the Black Sea. It was Moscow that attacked the formerly Ukrainian-occupied Snake Island in the Black Sea. The damage to Moscow, built during the Soviet era, was a major setback for the Russian Navy. The Moscow is the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. Moscow is capable of carrying dozens of anti-ship missiles and anti-submarine torpedoes.
യു Mariupol Mayor Vadim Boichenko has rejected Russia’s claim that more than 1,000 Ukrainian troops surrendered in Mariupol and that the port city is under their control.
