On Thursday, Ukraine passed a controversial law on increased mobilization in the shadow of serious Russian attacks on its own infrastructure and many difficulties ahead. According to media reports, 283 MPs voted for the amendment. 226 votes were needed.

Primarily, the law tightens the rules for registering people fit for military service. When it comes into effect, all men of military age between 18 and 60 are obliged to carry their military passport with them during the current period of martial law. The men also have to update their personal details within two months, or face penalties.

Objection from relatives of soldiers

New overseas travel documents will only be issued if military documents are available. However, these are only available when you return to Ukraine. Anyone who ignores meeting calls and notices will not only be fined but will also have their driving license revoked.

The text of the law does not include the right of soldiers to retire from service after three years. It was said in advance that a separate law would be passed for that purpose. Relatives of soldiers regularly protest in Kiev and elsewhere demanding the release of their loved ones from military service after more than two years of war.
