Rubio Signals Progress in Ukraine peace Talks, Moscow Visit Looms
Ukraine peace negotiations, spearheaded by US officials adn involving a Ukrainian delegation, are showing initial promise, though meaningful hurdles remain. The talks, held Sunday in Florida, represent the latest push for a diplomatic resolution to the nearly four-year conflict sparked by Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
Diplomatic Push Gains momentum
Discussions were described as “very productive and useful” by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and “productive and accomplished” by the Ukrainian delegation. The meetings follow the leak of a 28-point US peace plan that reportedly caused concern in Ukraine and among its European allies due to perceptions it favored Russian interests.
The Ukrainian delegation was led by Rustem umerov, the nation’s new chief negotiator, who replaced Andriy Yermak following his resignation amid an anti-corruption examination. Also present were Steve Witkoff, an envoy for President Donald Trump, and Trump’s son-in-law, jared Kushner. Witkoff is scheduled to travel to Moscow next week for further discussions.
“It’s not just about the terms that end fighting,” Rubio stated during the meeting in Hallandale Beach, north of Miami. “It’s about also the terms that set up Ukraine for long-term prosperity… I think we built on that today, but there’s more work to be done.” Rubio emphasized the goal of securing a peace that leaves Ukraine “sovereign, autonomous and prosperous.”
Ukraine Outlines Core Priorities
Umerov, speaking at the start of the talks, articulated Ukraine’s key objectives: “We are discussing about the future of Ukraine, about the security of Ukraine, about no repetition of aggression of Ukraine, about prosperity of Ukraine, about how to rebuild Ukraine.” He affirmed US support, stating, “US is hearing us. US is supporting us. US is working beside us.”
President Trump, speaking from Air Force One, expressed optimism, saying the talks were “going along well” and that a deal to end the conflict was “a good chance.” He confirmed plans to dispatch Witkoff, and potentially Kushner, to Moscow this week to engage with President Vladimir Putin regarding the revised peace plan.
Zelensky Seeks Assurances,Territory Remains Key Issue
Ukrainian President volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the “constructive dynamic” of the talks, emphasizing the importance of openly addressing all issues with a focus on Ukraine’s sovereignty and national interests. He expressed gratitude to the US and Trump for thier efforts.
A crucial sticking point remains the fate of Ukrainian territory currently annexed or controlled by Russia.According to a source close to the Ukrainian delegation, the Florida talks were “not easy,” but all parties are “trying to be constructive and find a solution.”
Zelensky is scheduled to meet with French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris on Monday, continuing the diplomatic effort with a key ally. The conflict, rooted in the 2014 overthrow of Ukraine’s pro-Russian president and Russia’s subsequent annexation of Crimea and support for separatists in eas
