The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights recalled that the “international law prohibits the forced transfer of protected persons within an occupied territory or their expulsion“.

Volker Türk was reacting to comments from senior Israeli officials who are calling on Palestinians to leave Gaza.

This Monday, the Israeli Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, asked Jewish settlers to return to Gaza after and “encouraged” the Palestinian population to emigrate.

“It is necessary to promote a solution that encourages the emigration of Gaza residents. It is a correct, fair, moral and humane solution”he declared.

The head of Finance, Bezalel Smotrich, also recently defended the return of Jewish settlers to Gaza and the emigration of its Palestinian population.

Between 1967 and 2005, Israel evacuated the army and around 8,000 settlers from Gaza as part of then-Prime Minister Ariel Sharon’s unilateral withdrawal plan.
