The United Nations (UN) recognized the medicinal properties of marijuana and removed this plant from the list of narcotic drugs, however, its recreational use continues to be prohibited in international standards.

The Commission on Narcotic Drugs, executive body on drug policies of the UN made up of 53 states, in a vote in Vienna they removed also known as cannabis and its resin from Schedule IV of the 1961 Drug Convention.

With the exception of Hungary, all participants from the European Union and many from Latin America had a majority of 27 votes to approve this change, while most Asian and African nations opposed it. The United States has relaxed measures in this regard and although marijuana is now legal in some states, a federal bill to legalize it is currently being voted on by the House of Representatives.

This new recognition marks a milestone in the record of drug decisions in recent decades and is an important step in research into the healing properties of marijuana.

Some preliminary studies showed encouraging results from the treatment of diseases such as Parkinson’s, sclerosis, epilepsy, chronic pain and cancer with this plant.
