The UN Security Council (SC) has postponed voting on a draft Middle East resolution prepared by the body’s non-permanent members calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. A diplomatic source in the world organization reported this to TASS on Friday, Day.Az reports.

The voting was initially scheduled for 19:00 Baku time on March 23. Now it can take place on March 25.

Earlier, Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, announced support for the document of the non-permanent members of the UN Security Council. He is also supported by a group of Arab countries in the UN. In its current version, the draft resolution demands “an immediate cessation of hostilities during the month of Ramadan, which will be respected by all parties and which will lead to a permanent and sustainable ceasefire,” and also calls for the immediate release of all hostages without preconditions.

On March 22, Russia and China used their veto power in the UN Security Council and blocked a draft resolution submitted by the United States, which “identifies the urgent need for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire” in the Middle East, but does not contain a corresponding demand or call. In addition to the Russian Federation and China, Algeria opposed the document. Guyana abstained. The UK, Malta, Mozambique, the Republic of Korea, Slovenia, the USA, Sierra Leone, France, Switzerland, Ecuador and Japan cast their votes in support.
