The number of police reports regarding serious crimes committed at school has increased – but not the actual crime rate, which is on the contrary decreasing.

This is shown by Brå, Crime Prevention’s latest study of serious school violence, which was presented on Friday.

The study covers the last 15 years. During that period, the percentage of students in year 9 who say they have been exposed to serious violence has varied – but today it is significantly lower than in the 2000s.

– However, we see that the tendency to report has increased significantly, says Johanna Olseryd, investigator at Brå.

Brå also states that both those who are behind and those who are exposed to the gross school violence, to a large extent belong to a vulnerable group. For example, bullying, problem behaviors and mental illness are more common in that group than in other children. In the most egregious cases, there is often a known problem picture from before, which testifies that the perpetrators have different types of support needs.

Of the 15-year-olds, 2.4 percent of the boys and 1.5 percent of the girls state that they were exposed to violence in the school environment that required some type of care.
