The advance of the Christmas shopping campaign, with the “Black Friday” sales, has not prevented unemployment from rising in November in Asturias. The region ended the month with 57,984 people unemployed. There are 76 more than in October (an increase of 0.13%) and 5,017 less than a year ago (-7.96%). Asturias has had four months of unemployment increases and the November figure contrasts with the 0.89% drop recorded in Spain as a whole.

The services sector, agriculture and fishing and, above all, industry managed to reduce their unemployment lists in Asturias (with 52, 1 and 102 fewer unemployed, respectively), but they did not manage to compensate for the increases in construction (67 more unemployed). and in the group of those without previous employment (164 more). Unemployment among those under 25 years of age grew by 3.3% in November.

During the month of November, 19,062 employment contracts were made in Asturias, 3,163 less than in the previous month and 142 less than in November 2022. 82.3% of them were made in the services sector. Permanent contracts represented 32.6% of the total in the region, while at the national level they represent 41.5%.

The average number of Social Security affiliates in Asturias was 379,280 people in November, 518 less than the previous month (-0.14%) but 6,759 more than in the same month of the previous year (1.81%).

The regional government highlighted that the increase in unemployment in November (0.13%) is the smallest in the last nine years and that the unemployment data is the best for November since 2007, the year before the start of the financial crisis, and those of affiliation the best since 2010. “Employment in Asturias is driven by the metal sector, services – supported or favored by “Black Friday” – and internship contracts in town halls, which have had a positive impact,” said the managing director of the Principality’s Employment Service (Sepepa), Begoña López.

“We find ourselves, once again, with a more negative evolution than in Spain as a whole, although not as accentuated as in previous months,” highlighted Ignacio García, director of the Corporate Support area of the Asturian Federation of Entrepreneurs. (FADE), which added that “it is essential to use all available instruments to encourage the increase in economic activity and employment, even more so with forecasts for 2024 affected by significant uncertainties.

Among the unions, UGT highlighted the “strength” of the Asturian labor market since November ended with almost 8% fewer unemployed compared to the same month of the previous year, although it also warned that it is necessary to continue promoting coordination to advance measures that improve the quality of employment. For CC OO, the rise in unemployment in November is due to the increase in young people seeking a first job, which is why it called for a specific shock plan for this group. “It is worrying because it shows that Asturias is incapable of providing work to people who want to join the labor market, and that they will end up leaving if they do not succeed here,” said the union’s employment manager, María José Gutiérrez.

Telefónica and unions started this Monday the negotiation of the collective dismissals that the company intends to carry out in Spain. The company’s management informed the union representatives of its intention to activate three employment regulation files (ERE) in its large subsidiaries in the Spanish market to cut staff. The group estimates that the current surplus stands at 5,124 jobs between the three companies (4,085 in Telefónica de España, 958 in Telefónica Móvil and 81 in Telefónica Soluciones), which represents a quarter of the workforce in Spain. From the representation of the workers it was pointed out that not all the surplus detected by the group’s management has to be resolved through resignations, but that other measures can also be articulated such as requalification or change of activity of employees. The specific number of estimated casualties has not yet been provided by the company. Telefónica’s plans involve applying the exits in three years, throughout the entire duration of the group’s new strategic plan. The collective dismissal processes are expected to apply to workers over 55 years of age (employees born in 1968 or in previous years) and who have a minimum seniority in the company of 15 years. The departures will affect all work centers and all autonomous communities, according to what was made public by UGT, the majority union with representation in the company. At the moment, the company has not provided details about the conditions it will offer to facilitate departures. Telefónica has not used the ERE formula to reduce staff since 2011. The last departures were in voluntary resignation plans with compensation and social benefits.
