The Invisible All-Stars: Ranking the Greatest Unseen Characters in Television History

A celebration of the supporting players who never appear on screen, yet leave an indelible mark on our favorite shows.

For decades, television has captivated audiences with memorable characters. But while we frequently enough recall those we can see, a surprisingly powerful minority operates just beyond the camera’s gaze. These unseen figures, largely found in comedies but with notable dramatic exceptions, have earned their keep and deserve recognition for their enduring impact. Here’s a ranking of the 10 best characters whose faces we’ve never actually seen.

10. Ugly Naked Guy (Friends)

The butt of many jokes in the iconic sitcom Friends, Ugly Naked Guy – originally known as Cute Naked Guy – was a nudist residing across the street from Monica and Rachel. He famously never closed his curtains, often seen relaxing in a hammock by the window. While he appeared on camera three times throughout the show’s run, always from behind, his identity remained a mystery for years. An internet sleuth eventually revealed the actor behind the character to be Jon Haugen.

9. Erica (BoJack Horseman)

Across six seasons of the animated series BoJack Horseman, Erica remained an enigma. Nobody knew her appearance, her style, or even her species. She was perpetually referenced, primarily by Mr. Peanutbutter, whose exclamations painted a bizarre picture: “Erica! How are you looking so beatiful? I’m furious!”,”Erica! Is that you? Who let you out of the burn ward?” and “Erica! what are you doing here with a child-sized coffin?”

8. The Prime Ministers (The Thick of It)

The political satire The Thick of It deliberately kept the nation’s leaders off-screen, portraying them as looming, chaotic forces. We never actually meet any of the men running the country, but enough is revealed to infer their personalities. The first is depicted as obsessed with legacy, mirroring Tony blair, the second a Gordon Brown stand-in whose supporters are labeled “nutters,” and the third a posh Conservative coalition leader who re

7. Mrs. Columbo

Columbo existed solely through her husband’s descriptions. (“She has a proverb for every situation”; “Well, my wife, she says I’m second-best, but she claims ther are eighty fellas tied for first”; “She’s mad at everyone”). This made her as beloved as her husband. However, it’s best to ignore the short-lived NBC series Mrs.Columbo from 1979-80, where Kate Mulgrew played the character as a crime-fighting reporter.

6. Sue Mucklowe (This Country)

Perhaps This Country’s greatest character, Sue Mucklowe, was heard – loudly – but never seen. Voiced by Daisy May Cooper herself, Sue made her presence known through a barrage of angry outbursts directed at her daughter from upstairs. In one notably memorable scene, she screamed,”You know what would be a random act of kindness? You wiping your arse properly so I don’t have to spoon shite out of your knickers every time I do a bloody wash!”

5.Maris Crane (Frasier)

The all-time gold standard of unseen television characters, Maris Crane, was described so thoroughly by her unhappy husband, Niles, that she felt remarkably real. Supposedly 4ft 10in tall, she had an aversion to food and lacked skin pigmentation. From a wealthy family, she was prone to fatigue and suffered from numerous allergies, unable to produce her own saliva. The last anyone heard, she was hiding on a private island after allegedly killing her boyfriend in self-defense. What a woman.
