The Omicron variant affects people who have been vaccinated and those who have been infected once. Tedros Adanam said the death rate would rise among those who did not receive the vaccine.
The number of patients per day reached its highest level in European countries. In the wake of the Omicron expansion, most countries are tightening controls. Announcing further restrictions will take into account the number of patients in the coming days.
Omikron was first confirmed in South Africa last month. Omikron’s presence was later confirmed in all other countries within a short time. Now the concern is whether Omikron will cause a severe Kovid wave like Delta.
Tedros Adanam points out that the challenge is to ensure equal distribution of the vaccine in all countries. At least 70 percent of the total population in every country should have received the full dose of the vaccine. He reminded that this is the challenge of 2022. Tedros Adan also stressed the need to combat anti-vaccination campaigns.
