The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on Sunday that irregular immigration needed a “European response” and called on other EU countries to welcome some of the migrants arriving in Italy.
“Irregular immigration is a European challenge that needs a European response,” she told the press on the Italian island of Lampedusa, faced like every summer with arrivals of tens of thousands of migrants, calling for “Member States to welcome” migrants disembarked in Italy. “It is the future that Europe wants to give itself that is at stake here because the future of Europe depends on Europe’s capacity to face major challenges”, such as these uncontrolled migratory flows, declared the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, at his side.
