If there is one genre that Tamil cinema has not taken up much, it is science fiction. In 2015, a full-fledged science fiction film ‘Today Yesterday Tomorrow’ was released to overcome that shortcoming. Director Ravikumar has come up with his second film almost 9 years after the release of the film, which was shot very elegantly so that even a simple fan can understand the journey of time. Let’s see if ‘Ayalan’ reaps the rewards of this long wait.

An object called ‘Spark’ scattered from a meteor that hits the earth from outer space is found in the hands of the villain. The villain’s aim is to dig down to the core of the earth with it and steal the resources available there. On the other hand, Nayagan Tamil (Sivakarthikeyan), who is farming with his mother in the village, is also deeply concerned about environmental protection. Coming to Chennai in search of survival, he joins Karunakaran and Yogi Babu’s team, which organizes birthday surprise parties.

An alien from an extraterrestrial planet in search of an object called the Spark on Earth goes to the villain’s place to retrieve it, but is attacked by the villain’s men and loses his spaceship to them. After this, the alien meets Sivakarthikeyan and along with him defeats the villain’s purpose? The screenplay of ‘Ayalan’ is about whether the spaceship of the alien has been found again.

The film was launched in 2017. A way to recover from various issues including graphics lag is now out. In the meantime, the director left the film and did not appear in any other film. As a result of the team’s hard work to bring this film to the screen, ‘Ayalan’ has come out as a technically quality film.

The graphics are so elegant in the scenes that have never been seen in Tamil. In particular, the alien’s body parts, from its movements to its body language, have been precisely created. Special kudos to the technical team. It is usually said that the lack of attention to lighting in Indian cinema is the reason for poor graphics. But in this film, accurate graphics are used without any such flaws. The alien is also designed in a cute way and is likely to appeal to children.

The first 30 minutes from the start of the film are the same clichéd scenes of agriculture, corporate villain, typical heroine of Tamil cinema. The hero, who is an environmentalist, comes to Chennai in search of survival. I don’t know why it is such a drag to tell the alien who comes there and how his friendship is formed. After Sivakarthikeyan meets the alien in Chennai, the film makes him sit up straight. The scenes that follow, especially the scenes from Yogi Babu – Karunakaran meeting the alien for the first time till the intermission, are well written.

After the break, there are some scenes here and there that have given way, but many scenes, including the ones moving towards the climax, are not compelling. Likewise, apart from the graphics, the alien-related scenes in the film are not innovative or intelligent. Sivakarthikeyan – Alien could have paid more attention to the emotional scenes. The hero-villain-alien conflict scenes did not make a big impact as the character of the villain was also not strongly developed.

Sivakarthikeyan has usually done whatever comes his way flawlessly. The comedy sequences of Yogi Babu – Karunakaran combination in the first half help to keep the film lively. As usual, Rahul Preet Singh does what a heroine does in a commercial Tamil film. Apart from supporting the hero throughout the film, he didn’t do any meaningful work.

As the villain Sharad Khelgar comes and goes as a typical corporate villain with a shiny hairstyle. For Isha Gobikar, the character keeps killing the villains. A pathetic character without a single dialogue. Siddharth’s voice suits Alien perfectly.

As mentioned earlier, the quality graphics are the major strength of the film. Nirav Shah’s excellent cinematography supports it throughout the film. AR Rahman’s background score is nothing to rave about. He has worked hard to ensure that the songs don’t just sound good. Art Director Muthuraj’s work is evident in Villain’s Lab, Karunakaran’s House/Office, Alien Spaceship.

If you go into science fiction expecting something new and deep, you will be disappointed. But those who are looking for an entertaining film can enjoy watching ‘Ayalan’ with their family. ‘Ayalan’ would have turned out to be a quality commercial work if the team had given some uncompromising effort to the quality of the graphics of the film and paid some attention to the screenplay.
