US-Israel Attack on Iran: Khamenei Reportedly Dead, Missiles Fired in Gulf

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

Washington D.C. And Tel Aviv – A coordinated attack by the United States and Israel on Iranian soil has dramatically escalated tensions in the Middle East, triggering a retaliatory missile barrage from Tehran targeting both Israeli and U.S. Military installations. The strikes, dubbed “Ruggito del Leone” by Israel and “Epic Fury” by the U.S., represent a significant shift in the long-standing conflict between Iran and its adversaries. The situation remains highly volatile as international observers scramble to assess the full extent of the damage and potential for further escalation. This developing situation follows the failure of multiple rounds of nuclear talks aimed at preventing a military confrontation.

The attacks commenced this morning, targeting what officials in both Washington and Tel Aviv described as key government and military sites across Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump stated the operation was intended to “defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” characterizing the leadership in Tehran as a “ferocious group of very hard and terrible people.” He further warned Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (Pasdaran) that surrender would be met with “fair” treatment and “total immunity,” but continued resistance would result in “certain death.”

Initial reports from Israeli sources claim the operation aimed to “create the conditions for the fall of the regime,” with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei identified as a primary target alongside President Masoud Pezeshkian. However, conflicting information quickly emerged regarding Khamenei’s fate. While Israeli officials initially asserted that Khamenei was killed in the raids and his body recovered, these claims remain unconfirmed. Iranian state media, affiliated with the Revolutionary Guard, reported that Khamenei is “firmly in command” and directly overseeing the response to the attacks, citing a member of his media team, Mehdi Torabiyan.

Iran has vowed a “crushing response,” with the Revolutionary Guard launching what they’ve termed “Truthful Promise 4,” the initial phase of their retaliatory operation. Threats have been made to utilize “unseen weapons” targeting U.S. Military assets, including the Fifth Fleet command in Bahrain, bases in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and locations within Israel. The U.S. Military command has stated there have been no reported casualties or injuries among American personnel, and damage to installations has been minimal. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that “approximately 200 fighter jets completed an attack against the regime’s missile and defense systems,” calling it the “largest attack in the history of the air force.” The IDF stated that hundreds of munitions were dropped on roughly 500 targets, including defense systems and launchpads. Approximately 90 Israelis have sustained minor injuries due to ballistic missile attacks originating from Tehran.

Casualties and Damage Assessment

The situation on the ground remains fluid, and accurate casualty figures are difficult to verify. Iranian state media reports at least 200 deaths and 747 injuries across 24 Iranian provinces. Specifically, reports indicate 85 deaths in a strike on a girls’ school in Minab, Hormozgan province, in southern Iran. The Iranian Red Crescent has reported these figures, but independent verification is lacking.

Beyond the reported casualties, the extent of the damage to Iranian infrastructure is still being assessed. Israeli officials claim to have destroyed Khamenei’s residential complex, along with reports of fatalities among his family members, including a daughter-in-law and son-in-law.

Regional Reactions and International Concerns

The attacks have triggered a wave of reactions across the region and internationally. Explosions and air raid sirens were reported in Doha, Qatar; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Tel Aviv, Israel, according to CNN reporting teams on the ground. The U.S. And Israel have maintained close coordination throughout the operation, with Trump stating he approved the action after a recent visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington.

The current conflict builds upon existing regional tensions, including the Twelve-Day War between Israel and Iran in June 2025. Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir described the current operation as “broader” than the previous conflict. Trump suggested the operation could be concluded quickly, stating, “I can proceed and take control of the entire operation, or conclude it in two or three days and tell the Iranians ‘We’ll see you in a few years if you start rebuilding your nuclear and missile programs.’”

Unconfirmed Reports and Ongoing Uncertainty

Despite initial claims of Khamenei’s death, the situation remains unclear. Israeli officials have reportedly shown Netanyahu an image purporting to be Khamenei’s body, but this has not been independently verified. Reports of a planned televised address by Khamenei were later dismissed. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed the deaths of “two commanders,” but asserted that other high-ranking officials, including the head of the judiciary and the parliament speaker, survived the attacks.

The situation is rapidly evolving, and the potential for further escalation remains high. The coming days will be critical in determining the trajectory of this conflict and its impact on regional stability.
