US professor to spend 100 days underwater

University of South Florida professor Joseph Dituri, known online as Dr. DeepSea is going to spend 100 days underwater. Its goal is to find out how underwater life affects the human body. The experiment began on March 1 and will last until June 9, Smithsonian Magazine writes. Day.Az.

Since the beginning of March, the 55-year-old scientist has been staying at the Jules Underwater Lodge hotel, which is located off the coast of Florida (USA) at a depth of about 9 meters under the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

“The human body has never been under water for so long, so I will be closely monitored by specialists. During the study, I plan to study the effect of underwater increased pressure on my body. My hypothesis is that my health will improve from this.”

Since the scientist will live under conditions of high blood pressure, it is hoped that this can increase his life expectancy and prevent diseases associated with aging, the university said. This possibility stems from Dituri’s study, which demonstrated a potentially beneficial effect of this practice on cell viability.

He also wants to test the benefits of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO). This is a method of saturating a person with oxygen under high pressure for medicinal purposes. The conditions for this are ideal: so that water does not get into his temporary dwelling, air is constantly pumped into the space. As a result, the pressure in the room becomes about 1.6 times higher than on the surface.

With the success of the experiment, Dituri will be able to set a new world record for the duration of stay under water. Now it is 73 days.
