Red Sea is “path” for 12% of world trade
The Red Sea is used for the entry of ships that will pass through the Suez Canal, responsible for around 12% of world trade. The canal links Europe and Africa with South Asia and is vital for the movement of goods between continents.
The region has suffered frequent attacks from the Houthis and also the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas. On December 19, to protect the canal, the US partnered with more than 20 countries in Operation Prosperity Guardian.
