Delaying the administration of the second dose of the Covid vaccine, so that more people can receive the first, reduces the number of coronavirus deaths by up to a fifth. This is what emerges from a US study, published in the British Medical Journal. According to the study, which simulated the “real” evolution of a model based on 100,000 adult Americans, with the first dose of the vaccine alone, which offers 80% protection from the virus, 207 deaths per 100,000 people. If, on the other hand, the second dose of the vaccine were administered according to the foreseen time frame, the deaths would rise to 233 per 100 thousand people. The study therefore notes that postponing the administration of the second dose has benefits, as long as the vaccination rate is maintained daily between 0.1 and 0.3% of the population.
