Visa Revocations Surge under Trump
The number of visa revocations since President Trump’s second inauguration on January 20, 2025, is two and a half times higher than the number revoked in 2024, during the Biden presidency.This substantial increase reflects a deliberate strategy to restrict entry into the United States. According to the State Department, “thousands” of these revocations were linked to criminal activity, including offenses such as assault and driving under the influence.
Targeting Students and political Dissent
The administration has also demonstrated a willingness to revoke visas based on political grounds. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly defended the revocation of visas from students who participated in protests against Israel. This action was reportedly authorized under a decades-old law – reminiscent of the McCarthy era – that permits the US government to deny entry to individuals deemed to oppose US foreign policy. while some individuals targeted through this measure have successfully appealed deportation orders in court, the practice raises concerns about the suppression of free speech and academic freedom. Approximately 8,000 of the revoked visas belonged to students.
Beyond revocations,the Trump administration has implemented stricter vetting procedures for all visa applicants. These include increased scrutiny of applicants’ social media activity, aiming to identify potential security risks or ideological concerns.
Mass Deportations and Increased Enforcement
These visa revocations are occurring alongside a broader campaign of mass deportations, fueled by a significant increase in federal agents. The Department of Homeland Security reported last month that over 605,000 individuals have been deported under the Trump administration, with an additional 2.5 million having voluntarily departed the country.
