The assassin Theodore “Ted” Kaczynski, known as the “Unabomber”, has died in a US prison at the age of 81. A spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections told the AP news agency. Kaczynski was in a federal prison in the state of North Carolina on Saturday morning been found dead. Nothing was initially known about the cause of death.
Kaczynski, a Harvard-educated mathematician, had targeted scientists with a series of bombings. In 1996 he was arrested in the wilderness of western Montana in a simple cabin and in 1998 he was sentenced to life in prison without prospect of parole. He pleaded guilty to causing 16 explosions that killed three people and injured 23 others, some seriously, in different parts of the United States between 1978 and 1995.
Kaczynski suffered from paranoid schizophrenia
In 1996, Kaczynski, who lives in a hermit hut in the mountains, was arrested after a tip from his brother and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1998 – despite being diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Kaczynski had himself pleaded guilty. He was called “Unabomber” because his attacks primarily against universities and airlines, in English “universities ‹n airlines”.
In September 1995, the New York Times and the Washington Post published a lengthy manifesto by Kaczynski, in which he expressed his abhorrence of modern technology and the contemporary world. In return, Kaczynski had promised to end his series of attacks.
