His story is longer than himself.
Mary Quant, the mother of the mini skirt, died in London on Thursday at the age of 93. In fact, the Englishwoman has been immortal since 1962, when she designed her first Mini model. Quant gained worldwide attention and triggered a fashion revolution with their skirts, which always ended well above the knee. In the Netherlands they were even banned in some cases.
It still makes the headlines today. Heidi Klum (49) recently announced: “I’ll still wear a miniskirt when I’m 70 years old.”
Actress Uschi Glas (“Fack ju Göhte”) was a mini skirt fan from the very beginning. You to BILD am SONNTAG: “I bought my first miniskirt in 1965 in London. Inspired by the English supermodel Twiggy, she was a sensation in England. And of course all young women wanted to look like her, including me.” What brought young Uschi to England?
“I was going to a language school at the time and stayed in London for six months. I bought a short, pleated plaid tartan skirt and wore knee-high socks, feeling incredibly daring. When I wore it, I thought of my father and knew that he wouldn’t like me wearing such a short skirt…”
Does the miniskirt have a future? Wolfgang Joop (78) to BILD am SONNTAG: “Even the Romans basically wore miniskirts – but with boots. Of course the miniskirt will survive! At the moment the women are almost naked due to the current fashion. The miniskirt has long since become socially acceptable alongside the long skirt. And it is a wonderful symbol of the revolutionary power that fashion can have.”
