An international reference in the production of quality food, Santa Catarina increased the revenues of the agricultural sector in 2022. The Agricultural Production Value (VPA) reached R$ 61 billion, an increase of 13.8% compared to the previous year. The increase was driven mainly by the performance of animal production and the forestry sector. The data were analyzed by the Center for Socioeconomics and Agricultural Planning (Epagri/Cepa) and released by the State Secretariat for Agriculture this Thursday, 18.

“What Santa Catarina families do in the countryside has always been extraordinary. Santa Catarina is a small state, but with giant workers who produce with excellence for Brazil and the world. Our role, as a State Government, is to support, bring infrastructure, qualification, take care of the rural producer and keep young people working in the field. That’s why we are investing in innovation in all areas, as well as in the technical and professional work that maintains Santa Catarina’s sanitary status as a consolidated reference, opening doors to the most demanding markets”, stresses Governor Jorginho Mello.

The most prominent product of agriculture in Santa Catarina in 2022 was pig farming, with a turnover of R$ 12.3 billion. Pork production became responsible for 20.2% of Santa Catarina’s VPA, even with a 3.6% decrease compared to 2021. Santa Catarina is the largest producer and exporter of pork in Brazil and is coming at an accelerated pace growth in international sales.

The Agricultural Production Value shows the performance of crops, livestock and the forestry sector during the year and is calculated based on production and prices received by producers in the main squares of the state.

Animal production
Animal production accounted for 59% of the agricultural VPA in Santa Catarina. In 2022, the sector’s revenue was BRL 36 billion, up 10.4% compared to the previous year.

Poultry farming, the main product in Santa Catarina’s export basket, earned BRL 9.7 billion in 2022. Followed by milk production, present in 80% of the municipalities of Santa Catarina, with a VPA of BRL 7.9 billion and growth of 27.6% compared to 2021.

Another important increase was in the value generated by the production of chicken eggs for consumption, which surpassed R$ 1.1 billion and grew by 39%.

Crop Production
Another highlight of Santa Catarina’s agribusiness, crop production closed 2022 with a VBP of R$ 21.7 billion and accounts for 36% of the state’s total revenue. The sector had an increase of 15.9% compared to the previous year.

Soy is the sector’s flagship, with revenues of R$ 6.6 billion. Soon after, tobacco production appears, with R$ 2.9 billion. In fruit growing, bananas have the highest revenues with BRL 839 million and an increase of 30.4% compared to 2021.

Corn producers also had a significant increase in revenues in 2022. The PV was R$ 3 billion, an increase of 13.6% compared to the previous year. The growth is repeated in the production of silage with an increase of 50.9% reaching R$ 1.7 billion.

Forestry Production and Plant Extraction
The production of wood and forest products had an estimated increase of 30.9% in revenues in 2022. The sector’s VPA was R$ 3.3 billion. The production of wood for the industry has the greatest representation with R$ 2 billion of production value.

Highlights of Santa Catarina’s agribusiness
Santa Catarina collects the titles of largest national producer of pork, onion, apple, fish, oysters and mussels; second largest producer of tobacco, hearts of palm, poultry, pears, rice; third largest producer of wood, garlic and peaches and fourth largest producer of grapes, tilapia and milk.

The state is free of Cydia pomonella, considered the worst insect pest of fruit growing and is also the first state in the country to be recognized by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as an area free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination. Furthermore, along with Rio Grande do Sul, it is a zone free of classical swine fever.
