This Monday it was learned that Athletica Vaticana will participate in the World Cycling Championship that will take place in Glasgow (Scotland), from August 3 to 13, “in spiritual communion with Pope Francis and the young people” who will participate in the World Day of Youth – Lisbon 2023.

This is the second participation of Athletica Vaticana —the first sports association established within Vatican City— in this international cycling tournament, after the event held in Australia in 2022.

In statements released by Vatican News, the Archbishop of Glasgow, Msgr. William Nolan, stressed that the cycling world championship “is a great sporting event” that will help “bring together people of all cultures, languages and religions” and “build ties of friendship”.

The Prelate, who received the “Pope’s team”, also expressed his hope that “the Vatican’s presence here contributes to highlighting the good that can be done through sport, which, after all, helps to build bonds of friendship among all of us.”

The Athletica Vaticana team will be led by Rien Schuurhuis, husband of Chiara Porro, Australia’s ambassador to the Holy See.
