White passengers on a speedboat attacked a black employee, and the confrontation turned into a generalized fight in Montgomery, a city in the US state of Alabama. Videos show that the confrontation would have started when a man attacked the employee and several others joined the attacker. Then other people got into the mess, trying to defend the victim.
A witness identified as Christa Owen told ABC News that the attack happened after the employee repeatedly asked passengers to move the boat as it was preventing the ferry from docking. They refused, and the employee then got off the ferry and tried to move the vessel himself.
Montgomery police issued four arrest warrants for suspects who attacked the employee, and “there is a possibility” that more people could be charged, once other videos recorded by witnesses are analyzed. Officials did not release the names of the suspects.
“Last night, the Montgomery Police Department moved quickly to arrest several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job,” Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed tweeted in a statement posted Sunday. Warrants have been signed and justice will be done.”
“While our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we must not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community,” added Reed. “Those who choose violence will be held accountable by our criminal justice system.”
