Visiting the flood zone: everything lost, completely exhausted

by time news

Insul / Altenahr / guiltBernd Gasper has lost everything. Hotelier Wolfgang Ewerts is rebuilding three houses. And the Wurst’s strength is dwindling. A good six weeks after the devastating flood wave in the Ahr valley, thousands of houses have been put back into the shell – and now have to dry out for months, in many of them the plaster is still being removed.

The first particularly badly damaged houses have been torn down, most of the meter-high, oil-contaminated, mud-covered mountains of rubbish have been removed and some emergency bridges have been built over the Ahr. But the consequences of the destructive violence with which the tsunami-like wave broke through the idyllic valley can still be seen everywhere.
