Seattle, London Amazon has found major partners in the telecom industry for its planned network of Internet satellites. Vodafone and its African subsidiary Vodacom want to use the system, called Kuiper, to expand their network coverage in some areas, the companies announced on Tuesday.

Amazon wants to supply the first test customers with Internet from space in the coming year. By 2026, half of the 3236 satellites should be in orbit. Among other things, Kuiper will compete with the already active similar service Starlink of the space company SpaceX from tech billionaire Elon Musk.

Telecommunications providers can use satellite systems to extend the range of their networks without having to lay cables on the ground. This can be the more economical solution, especially in remote or sparsely populated areas. In this way, Vodafone wants to improve the supply of LTE and 5G data transmission in Europe and Africa.
