UAB Volleyball suffered a 3-1 defeat against the UTSA Roadrunners on Sunday afternoon, dropping their record to 0-4 in American Conference play. Despite a strong start, the Blazers were unable to maintain momentum as UTSA rallied to secure the victory.
First Set Triumph, Followed by Roadrunners’ Response
The UAB Blazers claimed the opening set with a decisive 25-19 win, fueled by early kills from standout player, Crook. However, the Roadrunners swiftly responded, winning the next three sets with scores of 26-24, 25-23, and 25-17, ultimately sealing the match.
In the first set, Crook’s offensive prowess helped establish a 5-3 lead for UAB. After UTSA briefly took the lead at 12-9, the Blazers embarked on an impressive eight-point run, ultimately securing the set with six kills from Crook.
UTSA Dominates Second and Third Sets
UTSA gained control in the second set, leading 10-6 after a key kill by Brooke Elliot. A balanced offensive effort, with six different Roadrunners contributing kills, propelled them to a 26-24 victory. The third set mirrored the second, as UTSA quickly established a 6-2 advantage and later extended their lead with a 5-1 run, eventually winning 25-23 despite a late push from UAB’s Mia Reese, who delivered a crucial kill to bring the Blazers within one point.
Fourth Set Comeback Seals UAB’s Fate
Entering the fourth set with a 2-1 lead, UTSA faced a determined UAB side that surged ahead, establishing a six-point advantage at 16-10. However, the Roadrunners mounted a remarkable comeback, fueled by a 10-3 run that shifted the momentum. Taylor Gaines secured the final two points of the set, clinching the match for UTSA.
Offensive and Defensive Standouts
UTSA’s offense proved effective, achieving a .196 hitting percentage and out-blocking UAB 9-13. Taylor Gaines led the Roadrunners with 14 kills, supported by Gigi Mason’s 15 kills and Ally Tribe’s 12. Setter Megan Hawkins orchestrated the attack with 52 assists and added 11 digs for a double-double, while libero Giada Obregon anchored the defense with a match-high 20 digs.

Mia Reese also contributed significantly with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs, and Abby Jones added 14 kills on a .345 hitting percentage. Despite these individual performances, the Blazers were unable to overcome UTSA’s momentum after the initial set.

With this result, UAB’s overall record falls to 7-9, with an 0-4 record in American Conference play. UTSA improves to 10-5, boasting a 3-1 record within the conference.
UAB will now head west for two crucial conference matchups, facing Tulsa on October 10 and Wichita State on October 12.
