The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky, declared this Wednesday that the recommendation of the European Commission to open accession negotiations with Kiev is a recognition of the reforms carried out in the middle of the war and “a correct step” that brings Ukraine closer to integration into the European Union (EU).
“Today the history of Ukraine and all of Europe has taken a correct step”Zelensky said in a speech published on his social networks.
The Ukrainian president added that Ukraine “should be in the European Union”. “Ukrainians deserve it”he added, because the Ukrainian soldiers “protect the values” Europeans and the country has been able “to keep his word” and to reform state institutions “even in the midst of a large-scale war.”
Zelensky pledged to continue making the “necessary decisions” to move towards integration into the EU and thankeds “to all those who help” to Ukraine on that path.
The European Commission today gave the green light to the start of accession negotiations with Ukraine, Moldova and Bosnia-Herzegovina, while he recommended that Georgia be granted candidate country status.
