People carriers are experiencing a resurgence. Lexus and Volvo models will soon be added to the electric proposals from Mercedes-Benz or Hyundai, already available.
For the Swedish brand, this represents a historic milestone, as it had never sold a similar silhouette in its 96-year history.
Not many details are known about the EM90, except that the brand considers it a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) and that it is designed as a “Scandinavian living room on wheels.” That is to say, diaphanous, minimalist and pleasant.
The electric vans and minivans sector is gaining popularity among luxury brands as executive cars with a private driver, since they are much more spacious than conventional passenger cars and do not have to deal with the hassle of parking.
This is especially true in Asia, where population density means that the roads are frequently congested. In fact, it is possibly one of the few markets where there is a high enough demand to warrant the construction of minivans.
In fact, Volvo currently has no plans to sell the EM90 in Europe and the US. The company is considering marketing it outside of China, but they have not yet issued a firm statement on the matter.
In the country, minivans are a considerable part of the market. In the first half, they accounted for 484,000 units, an increase of 26% compared to the previous year, the highest of all segments.
Volvo, which is owned by the Geely Group, needs a boost in China. Predictably, the EM90 will use the same platform (SEA) as the Zekr 009, a three-row ‘premium’ minivan that debuted on the market last January. This is also not expected to be sold in Europe.
Looking ahead to 2025, the Swedish brand wants half of its vehicles to be 100% electric. By 2030, he expects them all to be. Until the middle of this decade, they have set themselves the goal of launching a new zero-emission model every year.
