The center-right European People’s Party (EPP), which has the largest faction in the European Parliament, approved during the congress the candidacy of Ursula von der Leyen, who will be re-elected for a second term as President of the European Commission (EC), Day.Az reports with reference to Interfax.

According to European media, during a secret vote at the party congress in Bucharest, von der Leyen secured the support of 400 delegates, 89 voted against. 801 EPP delegates had the right to vote. The publication Euractiv explains that the large number of abstentions shows that the approval of von der Leyen’s candidacy was “highly expected.”

Earlier on Thursday, during a speech, the candidate said she would work for peace, prosperity and security in Europe.

Von der Leyen was the only EPP candidate to run for the post of EC head. The EPP is one of the largest parties in Europe, it includes 49 collective members, national parties from 27 countries.
