The promotion of the equality of LGBTI+ people – participation in a National Strategy, is one of the action programs included in the plan of the Ministry of Education for 2024.
The plan and schedule
In a multi-page text, the Ministry of Education outlines the plan and schedule for the actions it has planned for the current year for students, schools and teachers. The program includes a number of actions such as:
Training program and educational material for teachers and education staff to prevent and combat violence – Program Filia with explicit reference to homophobia and transphobia, as well as to the management of issues of sexual orientation, expression, identity and gender characteristics of students, teachers and family members structures, with clarification of LGBTI+ terminology [ΕΣΔ ΛΟΑΤΚΙ+]. Establishment and operation of Gender Equality and Anti-Discrimination Commissioners in each A.E.I. – their parallel organization in Coordinating; Network.
2. Allowance of 300 euros for high school students. A financial support program for children’s sports that gives the opportunity to students of the 1st grade of high school to register in Sports Clubs of their choice, strengthening developmental sports, is provided for in the new action plan of the Ministry of Education for 2024. The annual action plan for the Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Education prepared by the Ministry of Education, its horizontal objectives are formulated and linked to strategic choices of government programming. In particular, for Secondary Education, the planning of the Ministry of Education for 2024 foresees a “SportPass” Voucher for Sports. Population of 1st grade students of the High School: 100,000 students. Potentially eligible students with family income criteria: 35,000 students. Voucher amount: €300.
Training of 50,000 teachers
The new Integrated Training Support Information System (IPS) was completed in 2021, with the aim of automating and ensuring the processes followed to provide certified training to everyone. The training OPS is based on modern tools of synchronous and asynchronous distance training. INEP/EKDDA has a register of certified trainers, certified programs and the necessary know-how and possibility of implementation, in order to meet the training needs of education officials (School Principals, Education Counselors, Heads of Education Affairs), as well as the needs of targeted training in bullying issues, but also human rights issues in general, which are included in the goals of the National Action Plans for the disabled, the LGBTI+ community, etc. Indicative Educational goals for 2024: Differentiated Teaching. Digital Skills (from school year 2023-24).
Completion of the recording of problems (mainly safety) in school buildings and related needs in general 4th quarter 2024 Collection of data on the condition of school buildings. Prioritizing interventions, solving housing needs. Development of an application for immediate registration and coverage of schools’ needs for small repairs of school buildings and for upgrades of school space as well as development of interventions based on schools’ action plans (painting, furnishing, functionalization of spaces).
Gradual implementation of the new General Education Study Programs
The new FPs prioritize skill development and the cultivation of critical thinking, emphasize learning outcomes, update course content, connect to an ocean of digital material, promote inclusion. Skills Workshops. The aim is to cultivate soft & digital skills, 21st century skills. Children’s experiential contact with 4 basic circles of concepts: social awareness, well-being, environment, entrepreneurship. Topics for the prevention and treatment of child sexual abuse are included. (ESDDP) .
English in Kindergarten (learning English in Kindergarten continues in the 2023-24 school year). Free choice of book Introduction of the “multiple book” with a change of mentality from a book-centric to a knowledge-centric model of education, so that the teacher/student can critically think and combine information from many sources and put an end to the phenomenon of memorization. Analytical guides in the context of curricula for school units of special education and education Compilation of analytical curricula, for the first time, for School Units of Special Education and Education (S.M.E.A.E.)
Continuation of the implementation of the new upgraded full-day Primary School program with the aim of supporting families and working parents. Said upgraded Full Day Elementary School program was piloted in those designated school units for the 2022-2023 school year and each subsequent school year. The new curriculum includes upgraded content, through activity groups such as educational robotics, experiments, public speaking, safe and creative Internet navigation, sports, traditional or modern dances, visual arts, crafts and constructions, learning musical instruments. Also, extra time is provided for learning, studying and playing at school.
