Wanju-gun Subsidizes Visa Upgrades to Attract and Retain Foreign Workers

Wanju-gun, a county in Jeollabuk-do, South Korea, is bolstering its efforts to attract and retain foreign residents through a new visa upgrade support project, offering financial incentives to those transitioning to long-term residency. This initiative aims to address both labor needs and demographic challenges within the region.

Addressing Labor Shortages and Demographic Shifts

Local officials recognize the critical role foreign workers play in sustaining Wanju-gun’s economic vitality. The county is proactively addressing potential labor shortages and a declining population by incentivizing skilled foreign nationals to establish long-term roots in the community. This approach goes beyond simply filling immediate workforce gaps; it focuses on fostering a stable, integrated population.

Details of the ‘Region-Based Visa Upgrade Support Project’

The ‘region-based visa upgrade support project’ aligns with broader national policies spearheaded by the Ministry of Justice and Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province. The program specifically targets individuals who convert their residency status to either skilled worker (E-7-4) visas or regionally specialized visas (F-2-R) after January 1, 2025.

To qualify for the one-time subsidy of 300,000 won (approximately $230 USD), applicants must demonstrate continuous residency in Wanju-gun for at least one month following their visa change. The county plans to support a total of 17 individuals through this program in the current cycle.

Application Process and Timeline

Interested applicants, or their designated representatives, must apply in person by December 18th. Applications will be accepted at the Population Policy and Foreigner Policy Team of the Wanju County Office and the Wanju Foreigner Support Center. This in-person requirement ensures direct engagement and assistance throughout the application process.

A Long-Term Investment in Community Growth

Wanju-gun officials believe this project represents a strategic investment in the future. “We want to help foreign residents take root stably in the local community by supporting visa upgrades,” stated Wanju County Mayor Yoo Hee-tae. “We will continue to pursue policies that allow foreign residents and the local community to grow together in the future.”

The county anticipates that the program will not only stabilize the foreign population but also contribute to a more robust local labor market and a more balanced population structure. This initiative signals a commitment to viewing foreign residents not merely as temporary workers, but as valued members of the Wanju-gun community.
