Aveley Secures Fourth Straight Victory, Solidifies Second Place in Isthmian Premier League

Aveley continued their dominant form with a 2-1 victory over Dulwich Hamlet on Saturday, February 7th, marking their fourth consecutive win at Parkside and cementing their position as a strong contender in the Isthmian Premier League. The result keeps the Millers firmly in second place as they pursue promotion.

Slow Start Masks Aveley’s Growing Momentum

The first half proved to be a largely uneventful affair, mirroring the lackluster weather conditions. Dulwich Hamlet struggled to generate meaningful attacking opportunities, relying on a slow and deliberate build-up from the back. Their most promising chance came from Nyren Clunis, who sent a shot wide of the right-hand post from close range.

Aveley also had their moments in the opening period. Chris Harris saw a follow-up effort sail over the bar after Jesse Nwabueze’s initial attempt was thwarted by Toby Bull, the Dulwich goalkeeper. Both teams had one final opportunity before halftime, with Mitchell denying Talla and a promising combination between Fletcher Hubbard and Harris ultimately failing to produce a goal.

Second-Half Surge Propels Aveley to Victory

The hosts emerged from the break with renewed intensity. Bull was forced into action early, tipping an effort from Saunders wide of the post. A strong appeal for a penalty, stemming from a potential handball that prevented Harris from reaching a through-ball, was waved away by the referee.

Bull’s performance remained pivotal, initially denying Nwabueze with a full-stretch save. However, moments later, a cross from Hubbard was inadvertently palmed into his own net by Bull, though the assistant referee ruled the ball had not fully crossed the goal line.

The deadlock was finally broken when Matty Johnson delivered an exceptional cross to Harris, who headed the ball into the net, striking the underside of the bar in the process. The goal ignited Aveley’s attack, and within ten minutes, they extended their lead. George Saunders skillfully maneuvered down the right side of the penalty area before calmly rifling a shot into the goal.

Late Goal Offers Little Comfort for Dulwich Hamlet

The final ten minutes saw Aveley relentlessly pursue further goals. Harris created an opportunity for Nwabueze, but Bull once again intervened with a crucial save. Bull then deflected a left-footed strike from Robinson wide of the post. Despite Aveley’s dominance, Dulwich Hamlet managed to force Rylee Mitchell, Aveley’s goalkeeper, into a difficult reaction save.

It appeared Aveley would secure a clean sheet, but a late consolation goal from Talla, who slotted home from the edge of the area, narrowed the scoreline.

According to post-match analysis, Brett Munyard expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance.

Aveley will next be in action on Saturday, February 14th, when they travel to the south coast to face Lewes.
