There should be plenty of water in the diet to keep the body active and physically capable. Water is needed for every function of the body. Water supplies oxygen and other nutrients to the blood and cells. Water is essential for almost all living things on earth. Fresh water is essential for the survival of human race and other animals. Today is World Water Day.

This year’s theme of the day is ‘Water for Peace’. Like other countries of the world, various government and private programs have been undertaken in Bangladesh to celebrate the day.

According to a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year. This proposal was adopted in Rio, Brazil in 1992. There was a demand to declare a special day for water resources. The first World Water Day was celebrated in 1993 and since then the importance of observing this day has gradually increased.

On the occasion of the day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages.

In his speech, the President said that equitable distribution and sustainable use of water from source to consumer should be ensured through proper management of water resources to ensure balanced availability of water.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her speech said that the best use of every drop of water can ensure universal equitable distribution and management of water.

He said, water can bring peace or conflict. Unequal distribution or scarcity of water creates tension and conflict. By facilitating public health, food security and economic development through balanced water management, it will play a helpful role in establishing world peace.
