– Already in 2017 we talked about the difficulty of accessing certain profiles, since the environment does not provide them to us. First, women do not opt for technical training; being 50% of the population they represent only 15% of the registrations. It is a problem of society. And we have an aging population. There is no fishing ground. We are missing about 1,500 professionals a year in the Basque Country. Something essential is to quickly reconsider people.

– So?

– We are focused on redesigning many things. Consider that, in addition, there is no sector, including the public, that does not incorporate technical profiles. The entire ecosystem opts for the same profile. It is something that worries us, a lot. And it is that this circumstance what it does is limit our future growth.

– Up to what point?

– The reality is obvious. In our case, as we discussed at Gaia’s last annual meeting, we could have grown between 4% and an additional 6% if we had had those professionals that we couldn’t find. How many sectors can we not serve due to lack of people? It is a direct relationship in the Basque economy as a whole.

– There are no transitions without people to carry them out…

– That is. It is a limiting factor for, for example, the digital transition. Or for energy. You may think: “They are going to come from outside.” But not. France, Germany, Madrid or Barcelona are just like us and wanting to take people from here to there. So… It’s a global problem.

– Where to look?

– We could search in India or other countries, but there are also restrictions and laws.

– Should that be made more flexible?

– Yes. Germany does it well; open wide and fast when interested. In the war in Ukraine he said on the first day: “I love all the technologists.” Here we should be more agile to implement, even temporarily, instruments for the incorporation of these professional profiles from anywhere in the world.
